I had finished work in the January of that year, and by the time it was February I had totally and utterly contracted cabin fever. I needed something to occupy my time, as I had nearly always been working since leaving school at 16. I remembered that I vaguely knew how to knit, so, off my fingers went on the internet getting me the various supplies needed. I started with baby matinee sets etc and as I gained more confidence I diversified into other items including toys and the odd item for an adult. I started getting quite an amount built up of all these items so I started going to car boot sales, but then I discovered craft fairs were the place to be for these things to sell at the asking price, even though I was told I wasn't charging enough! (still get told this today!) Baby clothes etc were a popular item for people to try to sell but I didn't see many knitted toys for sale, so that made up my mind and I decided to make toys. Jump forward to the present and this is what I mainly do now, although i will take custom orders for other things to be knitted from shawls to blankets and cardigans to ornaments. In 2019 I started to also make some castings, at first just out of plaster but then i changed to a tougher type of plaster (Crystacal) and I also started to experiment with resin, so there are now a few castings in that too, though not as large as the plaster ones.
There, that's the story of how Hand made in Caithness came to be, I hope you will browse the site and maybe even pick up a hand made bargain.
